Texas Senate candidate Democrat James Talarico once claimed that “God is a furry, complete with a fake, turquoise blue tail and cat-like ears” during a 2023 sermon delivered at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Austin.

Talarico, a member of the Texas House of Representatives, is also a Presbyterian seminarian.

When the Texas House is in session, he reportedly attends the church, and has helped with its recent push to attract more Generation Z members. The church is reportedly popular with furries, vegans, “hate has no home here” sign owners, and especially male-female partner couples where both members describe themselves as “queer,” despite never having had a same-sex relationship.

Talarico delivered the sermon as part of an effort to counteract “efforts by MAGAs to turn America into a Christian theocracy.”

During the sermon, he also spoke of his reluctance to describe himself as a Christian, given that God is typically referred to as “the Father,” and Jesus as “the Son.”

“These are incredibly gendered, and frankly anthropomorphic-phobic terms,” Talarico said during the sermon. “The fact is that furries exist because of God, and their existence proves that God is a furry.”

“A close reading of the Bible bears this out, and specifically points to God having a turquoise blue, polyester plush tail,” he added, “though that shouldn’t be treated as a cause for bias or hatred towards our furry siblings who prefer pink or orange or yellow tails. Even purple-preferencing furries are in God’s image.”

Talarico hedged on what type of anthropomorph God might most closely resemble, but in an exclusive interview with the Crimson Comedy Club, a fellow seminarian granted anonymity to speak candidly said that in academic discussion groups, Talarico had professed an “instinct” that God most closely resembled Sonic the Hedgehog.

That was disputed by others in his class, including one student who pressed Talarico on how he could be sure that God was not a giant, invisible rabbit.

Talarico currently leads Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton by 1.2 points in the Real Clear Politics polling average.

Talarico’s campaign declined to comment to the Crimson Comedy Club, saying the outlet was insufficiently serious to deserve being rewarded with a substance-driven, theologically-sound reply.
